Common medical ethics dilemmas faced in Saudi Arabia include: end-of-life care, patient rights, which comprise autonomy, informed consent, and confidentiality, reproductive ethics, and equity of resources. The identification of flaws within the healthcare system and the implementation of clear guidelines are important to overcome the risk of malpractice and flawed judgment, and ensure the delivery of the best possible care to patients.Item Dental implants and forensic identification: A systematic review(2023) Alwohaibi, R. N.; Reema Ali Almaimoni; Alshrefy, A. J.; Latifah Ibrahim AlMusailet; Shahad Abdullah Alhazzaa; Menezes, R. G.The use of dental implants has witnessed great popularity in recent years. It has been documented that dental implants are valuable aids in forensic identification. In particular, in the event of mass disasters, where distortion of body features may render the process of forensic identification challenging. The present review aims to explore the application of the use of dental implants in forensic identification. A literature search was performed on PubMed and Web of Science electronic databases. All studies addressing the application of dental implants for forensic identification published in English were eligible for inclusion in the review. This systematic review included a total of 14 articles that demonstrated the significance of dental implants in forensic identification. Three studies reported the use of dental implants in the process of identification of the deceased, one of which found the distance of the implant from the maxillary sinus was a pathognomonic feature of identity. Four studies conducted incineration experiments to assess dental implant characteristics following incineration. The studies identified the batch number and characteristic threads and grooves on dental implants despite incineration. The remaining studies evaluated the role of radiological assessment in identification. The findings of the aforementioned studies highlighted the benefits of radiologic imaging in identification. Dental implants carry extreme significance in forensic identification owing to their durability and ability to withstand extreme temperatures. This process can be further enhanced by the implementation of advanced technology in forensic cases.Item Effectiveness of Autologous Fat Transfer in the Treatment of Scar-Related Conditions: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis(2022) Abdulrahman Abdulaziz Alghamdi; Alghamdi, Abdulrahman Abdulaziz; Aljalfan, Abdullah Ali N.; Almenhali, Ahmed Abdullah; Al Jabr, Faisal Ali; Rashid, Ahmed Mustafa; Almas, Talal; Menezes, Ritesh G.Autologous fat transfer (AFT) has been introduced as a potential treatment option for scar-tissue and its related symptoms. In this narrative review, the authors investigate the epidemiology of honor killing in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Furthermore, the social, cultural, and legal aspects of honor killing are discussed. Numerous socio-cultural factors lead to the action of killing for honor in this region. They include deeply rooted patriarchal dominance, the desire to maintain social status, and being poorly educated. Honor killing perpetrators have similar characteristics, such as rating female chastity at a higher price and justifying violence against women. The impact of honor killing on family members is much greater than the perceived families’ beliefs of the community’s rejection of the female’s dishonorable behavior. Silence culture dominates these societies, and many crimes are under-reported in this region. Often, a judicial trial is not conducted for such heinous crimes. Penal code reforms, campaigns to promote human rights, steps to improve the education level, and active participation of civil society in condemning such crimes are a few essential measures that need to be considered in order to curb the social evil of honor killing.Item Research productivity in the genetics of papillary thyroid carcinoma (1991-2020): a bibliometric analysis(2022) Al Hamad, Mohammad; Lasrado, Savita; Albarbari, Hassan S.; Waris, Abu; Mohammad Abdelqader Al hamad; Khan, Muhammad Ajmal; Muhammed Ajmal Khan; Mohiuddin, Shamim Shaikh; Parmar, Rupesh; Zeidan, Nehal A.; Al-Qassab, Aqilah T.; Menezes, Ritesh G.
Background and aim: Papillary thyroid carcinoma accounts for 85% of thyroid follicular epithelial-derived cancers. G.; Bakhurji, R. S.; AlGhuneem, A. A.; Haya Abdullah M Alabdullah; Al-Saleh, N. I.; Ritesh George MenezesThe COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions of people around the world either directly or indirectly. Deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 as the underlying cause of death or as a contributing cause of death. It is estimated that millions of excess deaths were associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The importance of a clinical autopsy on COVID-19 corpses lies in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease better. Moreover, a forensic autopsy may be performed on a COVID-19-infected corpse when indicated for medico-legal purposes. From the autopsy perspective, handling COVID-19-infected corpses requires specific guidelines and safety measures to be followed to limit the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the causative virus. This is essential as COVID-19 is an emerging infectious disease caused by a newly discovered virus. This review narrates the safety measures that should be followed at different stages of handling COVID-19 corpses, starting from the death scene to burial and funeral. Ethical issues in handling COVID-19 corpses are also briefed in this review. As COVID-19 can be transmitted through infected bodies, it is crucial to wear recommended personal protective equipment, specifically for aerosol-generating procedures. There are specific safety measures to be considered before transporting the body to the mortuary, with particular requirements to be implemented there, such as specific engineering controls, staff training, and autopsy room precautions. After conducting the autopsy, disinfection of the tools and equipment, body bags, transport vehicles, and the autopsy room should be considered.Item The use of orthopedic surgical devices for forensic identification: A systematic review(2022) Abrar Hasan Bukhamseen; Aldhameen, Abrar A.; Alzayyat, Nof T.; Alqadeeb, Maria M.; Alotaibi, Bashair K.; Aljohani, Raghad I.; Ritesh George Menezes
Background and aim: Identification of human bodies is a necessary step in forensic practice. This paper aims to review the usage of orthopedic implantable devices for forensic human identification.

Methods: A search for relevant articles using the PubMed database in January 2021 identified 8 articles that met the inclusion criteria.

Results: These articles highlighted the importance of the use of orthopedic implantable devices as an additional method for positive identification, especially in disaster situations. It is a method that needs antemortem and postmortem radiographs, comprehensive information of the orthopedic implantable device like company and serial number, logo, name, medical records of previous surgical intervention, and for the family member’s history to match with the identification details.

Conclusions: Efforts should be made to include all information pertaining to orthopedic implantable devices in the medical records. Educating and training forensic experts on the use of such devices in the identification process is essential, as this technique is practical, low-cost, and time-saving.
Item Video games and violence among children and adolescents in the Arab world: A systematic review : Video games and violence in Arab world(2023) AlHazzaa, Shahad A.; Rawaa Nasser Alwohaibi*; AlMusailet, Latifah I.; Alshrefy, Afnan J.; Almaimoni, Reema A.; Ritesh George Menezes
Background and aim: Video gaming has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years. Video games have been associated with various negative effects on players, such as aggressive behavior and reduced apathy. The present review aims to investigate the association between video games and violence among children and adolescents in the Arab world, while highlighting the influence of the type of video games played, time spent playing, and other possible associated factors. Methods: A literature search was performed on PubMed and Web of Science electronic databases. All studies assessing video games and violence among children and adolescents written in English were eligible for inclusion in the review. A total of 9 studies were included in this systematic review. Results: Six studies investigated the relationship between video games and aggression, five of which found a significant association. Several factors have been studied to assess their role in mediating the association between the two. A statistically significant association was found between aggression and age and sex of the players, with a predominance among early adolescents and males. Longer durations spent playing video games were found in three studies to be significantly associated with a greater risk of aggression. Conclusions: In the Arab world, studies addressing this subject are limited. The discrepancy of reported results between video games and amount of violence could be attributed to the lack of standardization across studies. Therefore, it becomes imperative to further explore the association through conclusive studies with standardized measures.(www.actabiomedica.it)
