Abstract

Thanks to almighty Allah and peace be upon his prophet . This research, Abu Ishaq az-Zajjaj’s Interpretive Choices through His Book ‘The Meanings and Declension of the Qur’an’ from the Beginning of Surah At-Tawba to the End of Surah An-Nur. A Compilation and Study, is composed of an introduction wherein I highlight the relevant literature, research objectives, reasons for choosing this topic and why it is important, research limitations and research methodology and a preface wherein I address the meaning of choice and preponderance. The research falls into two main parts; the first is entitled Az-Zajjaj and His Methodology in Interpretation and Choice and comprises three chapters. Chapter One is entitled Introducing az-Zajjaj and comprises six subchapters. The first is entitled The Personal Life, like, the name and the nickname of az-Zajjaj . The second covers the period in which he lived. The third addresses his pursue of studying and the value of his knowledge. The fourth covers his belief, and his jurisprudence and grammar doctrine. The fifth mentions his teachers(shaikes) and his students. The sixth includes his legacy and classifications. Chapter Two is entitled Az-Zajjaj’s Methodology in the Book and comprises two subchapters. The first is The Scholarly Value of the Book, the second comprises Az-Zajjaj’s Methodology in Interpretation. Chapter Three is entitled Az-Zajjaj’s Methodology in Choice and comprises two subchapters. The first is about Az-Zajjaj’s Forms of Choice which is subdivide into 1-stating the chosen saying, and 2- stating the same without substantiation. The second is entitled Az-zajjaj’s Aspects of Choice and Preponderance, including choice based on Qur’anic verses with analogous verbalism, Qur’anic context, variant readings of the Qur’an, etc. The second part addresses and examines az-Zajjaj’s Interpretive Choices from Surah At-Tawba to the End of Surah An-Nur, a compilation and study. The conclusion sets forth the most important findings and recommendations of the research and is followed by technical indices
