The Subaltern Can Speak: Intertextual references to Greek Mythology in Selected Poems from Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the differences between Duffy’s employment of Greek myths and the original ones in order to let suppressed and silenced women speak. This thesis focuses on the unheard voices of some female figures in Greek mythology as they break their silence and tell their own stories. Using a variation of the title of Gayatri Spivak’s seminal essay is meant to highlight the strong affinity between the colonized-colonizer relation and women-men one. The researcher analyzes selected poems about female figures in Greek mythology as they appear in Carol Ann Duffy’s poetry collection The World’s Wife. This thesis utilizes the archetypal/mythological approach and intertextuality in order to compare the retold versions of Greek myths with their original versions. The researcher argues that through Duffy’s retelling of mythological stories, she helps to subvert patriarchy and elevate female identity. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter, “Intertextuality, Myth and Duffy”, discusses the theoretical background of the research including a thorough explanation of myth and intertextuality and relating colonialism to patriarchy. It also contains an introduction about the poet. The second chapter, “Women Empowerment”, revolves around selected poems which empower women and elevate their identity. This is achieved through analyzing the ancient Greek stories which marginalize women with Duffy’s version of the same stories which display those women in a new light. The third and final chapter, “Subverting the Patriarchal Image”, mainly discusses selected poems which negatively display men and subvert their identity.
